Piran is known as the pearl of Slovenian Coast, with narrow streets, colorful houses and amazing atmosphere represents one of the most splendid towns in Slovenian Istria. His significant Venetian Gothic architecture condense city to the one of the loveliest towns anywhere along the Adriatic coast. Piran it takes name from Greek origins from the word “pyr” meaning fire, when these were used as ancient “lighthouses” to warn ships on the angular peninsula on which the old town lies.
The old town is surrounded by the sea on three sides and by considerable remains of its thick town wall on the other. In the center on this lively history medieval town is well-preserved square Tartini, central place to head for. For a tiny town it is uncharacteristically large, and this is because it was in fact an inner harbor until it was filled in to form the current piazza in 1884.
Piran also represents a family home of Giuseppe Tartini, famous violinist and composer whose statue- erected to celebrate the 200th anniversary of his birth in 1892- dominates the main square.
Another great view – walk east is a 200m long stretch of the 15thcentury town wall where you can look down on the cathedral and old town to have a quintessential picture- postcard view of the city.
