Enjoy a 90-minute drive across Emilia Romagna countryside to the tiny Republic of San Marino: situated in the Apennine Mountains, it is a landlocked enclave, completely surrounded by Italy, over a size of just 60 square km.
San Marino is the oldest recorded sovereign state and constitutional republic in the world, having been founded on 3 September 301 by the stonecutter Marinus of Rab. Reach the top of the hill of Mount Titano and start your walking tour from Porta San Francesco. Piazza della Libertà overlooks the Republic’s Western territory and the region of Montefeltro. Here you can stop to greet the 1896 statue of Lady Liberty before seeing the exterior of Palazzo del Governo (Government Palace), the seat of San Marino’s Grand Council. Weather and timing permitting, during summer season, you can also have the opportunity to see the Changing of the San Marino Guards. Just above the square lies the neoclassical Basilica of San Marino. At the end of your guided tour you will have ample time for strolling around, choose the restaurant or trattoria you prefer for independent lunch and enjoy shopping in the little alleys of the old town. Collectors may buy unique coins and stamps of the Republic, but if shopping is not your scene, then why not visit the Church of San Francesco or, paying a small fee, have a San Marino stamp in your passport?
After a strolling around for a couple of hour, rejoin your guide and head back to Ravenna.
